Hey I'm Shane Hollands and I used to do this wierd and dangerous show called 'The Dirty Wordz Show' on that rebel community radio station Fleet FM.

I ran the show for just under a year & had some mad fun expounding my manisto on crossovers btween what is traditionally considered Spoken Word and Music, I was intent on exposing the way spoken word had slipped into pop culture disguised as songs. I always though a classic example of this is Lou Reeds 'Take a walk on the wild side' but there were multiple examples, some subtle as a jackhammer and some you would have to take a double take to notice.

I've had to stop doing the show (No they didn't kick me off and drag me out the door screaming :) because I feel I have made my point and I'm a creative soul that has to move on to new things every now and then.

Today I decided to archive all the shows that I have done with Fleet and there thy are to the left hand side of the page ---)

At present this blog has about 3 watchers so I guess it'll just be an archive but if you're new here feel free to follow me... (I don't like spam either so i won't send you shit, i'll just continue bloging what I'm up to).

The future really is a blank slate for me right now so we'll see.
p.s some of the links may be missing or might not work. I'll try to get back to them and fix them if possible.

Yep that time is really rollin’ on and The Dirty Wordz show is comin’ to a sunset peeps, I’d love to be able to stick around and frighten you all with the weird & wild of the spoken word crossover world but as the bishop said to the nun ‘babes I got shirt to do’. This is my second to last show and I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase all the lovely peeps that sent me in tracks to play since I started doing the show so I'm playing a selection of some of my favourite tracks by all of them, It’s been a hell of a ride, I paid my ticket and I took that ride an took some of you along with me and learnt a bit along the way.

Next week I’m blasting of with a live leaving party and have invited a few mad poetical friends to come in and party with me, they’ll be bringing show of their favourite and I’ll be playing just the pure fricken gold, so check both of these last gems before I wiggle my nose and go pop.

Oh Mama, can this really be a case of blatent self promotion? You bet yer fricken sweet twisted little word freak minds it is... Well OK the theme of today's show is the incredible Karen Hunter who just happens to be doing a show this Fri Night with a duo that also features heavy on the today stakes Beautiful Losers featuring a certain poetry junkie mr Shane Hollands. So stick a limerick in me eye and call me a self propogating agenderist, I don't give a toss because when shit is this good, (And if you've ever seen Karen or Beautiful Losers perform you know I aint lyin') then you just gotta holla it from the rooftops, ya know what I mean.

Karen is serious talent, I think she must have a Jazz bone because she rips it like she was suckled on Coltraine and had Thelonius as her first solids... Karen will be performing with a full kick-ass band including such Jazz luminiares as Ron Samson, who when he's not touring major jazz festivals throughout Canada and New Zealand happens to coordinates the Jazz Studies department at the University of Auckland, Niel Watson & Aaron Coddel, Check this vid out of all of them playing together HERE

I'm excited as a mexican jumping bean to be appearing on the same stage as her and keen to unvieling to our peeps some new material that Paul and I have been secretly working on in The Lab.... It's only our third gig that we have done together since reforming this year. Beautiful Losers was a genre defying concept right from the begining, Paul Williams has redefined the cello with the inception of Cellotronix a bold mix of technology and traditional instriment building soundscapes out of the multitute of noises a cello can produce using a fisherman pickup & (amoungst other devices) an Akia Headrush Loopstation leaving me to simply BeatSpeak into the audio dreams created and if you ask me we sound better that ever.

So if your within a stone's thrown of The Big AK City (Auckland to you buddy!) on Fri Night, Turn off the PS3, Shut down yer xbox, put yer foot through the TV set and UTurn yer Utube to get some real culture in the form of ScrapYard Caberet @ The Thirsty Dog On the dirty old K Rd Kickstarting late like at 9.30pm or you're really lost to it buddy, lost like a Beautiful Loser...

Well it’s been madness, I’ve been in the middle of moving and there are things strewn everywhere, my flat looks like the inside of my wallet, fricken wasteland. There are not too many dirty wordz shows left (so right now they're hotter that a brazillian on Edger Allen Poe trust me kids that's fricken hot) and I’m trying to really get to the crunch of what Dirty Wordz is all about…
These are prime examples of superb cross-over spoken word tracks, total mongrels, they’re about as pure as Madonna singing Like A Virgin, some cross slippy into hip-hop, dancehall, electro-trash and punk but all remain totally spoken word at their core. Well, Kid, as Tom Waits said "Sometimes life throws you a Curveball, Kid", the rumours are true, unfortunately Life has been thrown a flip ball at me and I can't make any commitments after Nov 1st so Tuesday 27th October is gonna be the very last Dirty Wordz Show with your host Shane Hollands (at least for an incalculable time). It's a shame, I have been pretty much enjoying my wild exploits & explorations into the wierd and very strange universe of Dirty Wordz, the guests, the dangerous mash-ups and even (kinda) the constant wrestle with the deamon that dwells inside the Fleet Computer. I hate to do it peeps but as Johnny Cash said, "There aint a god-damn thing I can do about it".

Thank you all the people that have made the Dirty Wordz Show a journey into beauty.

I figure that gives me about 9 shows left so my mission is going to make my last shows as bizzare and twisted beautiful statements of intent as I can.

I intend to break boundries and I tell you now that I will.

This week, thanks to suggestion by my good friend Xrys Burgess I've decided to do a mini feature on Shel Silverstein & also b.dolan

Sheldon Alan "Shel" Silverstein (September 25, 1930–May 10, 1999) was American poet, singer songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter & author. He sometimes styled himself as Uncle Shelby, especially for his early children's books.

Silverstein confirmed that he never studied the poetry of others and therefore developed his own quirky style: laid-back and conversational, occasionally employing profanity and slang.

Another cat you all should be looking at is b.dolan.

B. Dolan is an activist ,performance artist,slam poet based inProvinc, Rhode Island, USA B. Dolan's art is often incredibly genre-defying; though his work bares a clear hip-hop influence. He's been doing a lot of work with another Dirty Wordz favourite Sage Francis and they are both members of The Strange Famous Records Crew. Check out their website here & grab the free download of “House of Bees vol. 1,” a collection of songs released for free and mixed by SFR’s own Buddy Peace.

Ok well welcome to the 1st Dirty Wordz Show Listening Party!!
Yeah well, I hadda listen to the last 3 shows odd and decided yup, I’m gonna drop the more ‘Informative’ style and get back to focusing on what I’m best at.. Playing the Dirtiest mash-ups of spoken Wordz you can find this side of that blackened stump, The count is in, Less blathering away about useless bits of info and more time spent selecting those choicest of cuts for the show. I mean, really who cares if Mic Fricken Jagger did some backup vocals for the track, I just wanna shuddup and play those monkeys OK? Ya feelin’ me on this?..

So that’s what I did done yup. To kick it all off I decided to make it a ‘Listnin’ Party Event on good ol’ fb, and I’m blown away by the response, gee shucks here was I thunking that only James’s Cat actually listened to the show but waddyano (I don’t that’s fer sure). Ta to all that peeps that said they were tunin in today..

I think It’s made me lift my game a bit and I took an extra think about what I Really, Really wanted to put out there. well it's that time o the week again word-philes, yep Dirty Wordz time. I hope you all enjoyed the new more informative format.
It certainly takes me a shit load more time to research for it but I think it's definately worth it. Would be good to hear back from people to see if i'm just wasting my fricken precious time or not... Go on don't be shy. I have my usual Stella crew of the likes of William S Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and Bukowski et al. with a smattering of Local and International Spoken Word Artists and what I consider to be Crossover Musician's, It's a more POP feel with the tracks today with the inclusion of peeps like DEVO and The Fun Loving Criminals, Peaches and such but don't let that ut you off there is some serious Word-Action goin on. Sometimes from Chaos comes beauty, and last weeks show was nothing if not chaotic, with mad technology glitching like a a CD skipping on high speed, and herein lies the rub folks.. I am so fricken over Cd's and the issues they carry and the frustration didn't get much larger than last week when half my tracks just wouldn't play. I totally contemplated giving up the ghost and flicking my show entirely, luckily i was abused left, right and central for even suggesting it so that just ain't gonna happen jack.
but something had to change, so in the spirit of change i invested in another usb device and spent a fair amount of time listening to what has become one of my favourite broadcasts The Bob Dylan Theme time Hour for inspiration...
well I've completely restructured my shows format.

Ok so I’m starting to sound like a dyslexia challenged Tourette’s crack baby in my blogs yup.. killa set killa set f$#kn killa set and maybe I’m the boy that cried woofer a bit too much but hella what a stupendous eye candy set of what could only be described as word-porn without the shagging, I have wrought for your ear titillation this week. I’m gonna kick it all of with the sublime master of degradation Mr Billy Burroughs with his timeless classic reading from the seminal (no pun intended, really) book ‘Junkie’ 103rd Street Boys, after that nugget it slips squarely into solid word-action with everyone from NZ’s own Darcy Clay and the inimitable Apirana Taylor to the latest in the Canadian word scene with a few classics (they don’t get more classic than Ken Nordine) to the sublime Dystopia & Sugarbeat. Yes well, Shane here and I have some lovely Dirty Wordz from all over the globe for ya. I don't know if there is actually a theme going on here but there seams to be enough poetical conflict to shake a stick at so i guess it may be conflict, I'm conflicted about that one. I have a couple of great tracks from Heather Haley (who also goes by the moniker (Aural Heather) and a brand new track from the fantastic Wellington based band Hoopla! as well as my usual mix of mad-cap word hooligans and chaotic verse champions..

Special Guest on the The Dirty Wordz Show if Otis Mace who has worked with Dunedin Based Spoken word artist David Eggleton, He's a good friend and is just coming on to play a couple of tunes.

Otis Mace is a guitar ace who has played around England , USA and most of New Zealand. I'd hate to Categorize him but I'll say he reminds me a bit of Billy Bragg and a young Bob Dylan. There is definately a bluesy streak in his well fingered playing and he sings with a clear strong voice. He seams to make the ordinary sound wierdly mystical and poetical.

Ok so my good friend Brent Lewis (Nostromo Books) committed suicide last Friday. I don’t want to get into the whole bullshit about how selfish suicide is, yes of course it is & this world aint no bed of roses either, It doesn’t matter now. All that matters is I miss the shit out of him because he was a friend and a fucking nice guy who supported the arts, never voted fascist just for a ‘change’ and inspired a lot of fine peeps around Grey Lynn, Auckland which I called home for over 10 years (still do in some weird way).
Anyway I don’t have much more to say about that but I have decided to dedicate today’s show to him and I’m still hurting so don’t bitch to me about it being ‘ bit dark’, Yep it’s a black band collection of poems and songs about death and misery & if you don’t like it go and tune into some other bullshit poppy trite wank. Today I really couldn’t give a flying rats fuck if I’m just peeling it out to the either.

Yes well, I'm finally going to be able to deliver Dirty Wordz 21 to the studio today many apologies to those that were tuned into listen to it, for want of a pendrive a radio show was lost...
Anyway, I'm not going to dwell on it because I have managed to pack it in this week & apart from a couple of tweeks it's what I was going to deliver last week. It's another exciting mix of spoken word and music and to top it off I will be having David Eggleton, all the way up from frosty Dunedin in the studio today with his good friend and musical com padre Otis Mace to talk of Wordz & music and the wild weird world that mixing them up can produce. I've got two of David's spoken word/rock albums Versifier & Poetry Demon and I've been absolutely thrashing them at home so you can bet they will be appearing on the Dirty Wordz Show en mass. In fact there are a couple on the show today.
Eckhard Gerdes + Shelf Life sent me in some of his fantastic album Scuff Mudd so I'll also be giving away a few of those on the show.

The Dirty wordz sessions are a mash-up of live jazz and guest poets. I don't allow the guests to practice with the band so they have to beat their wordz over whatever the band does which makes for some inspirational mash-ups and moments of beauty.
Miriam Barr is Creative Director of The Literatti, Creator & Editor of SideStream, a Poetry Live organizer & a Guerilla Poet.
Murray Lee is a Literartist, a Poetry Live organizer & a Guerilla Poet.
Both of these poets are well versed in mixing wordz to music so it should be a fun event.

Way back in 2006 a completely underground, totally obscure, possibly underrated and completely Lost pair of Beautiful Losers went supernova and imploded blinking out of the Auckland night sky in a ball of flame & fury. Once hailed as soulful, erotic and menacing (Banned from Prana by the hippies for being 'Too Dark') they were sucked into a vortex inside the space time continuum never to return to this planet. There were casualties and collateral damage. The Beautiful Losers were lost again in one moment of brilliant pyro-osmosis.
Or so our oral history tells us..
Recently our satellite stations in Guadalupe have picked up a wierd pulse on the radar-scope...
The Beautiful Losers are destined to re-emerge from their bio-stasis.
Catch their fleeting madness if you dare. You may just get out with your mind intact.
This celestial event may never happen again.

Shane here, brewed up another fine batch of spoken cross-over madness for ya.
The Dirty Wordz Sessionz last Sunday was fantastic fun and full of surprises.
Anna Kaye jumped up first, winning the coin toss to deliver some soulful jazz styles and snuck a gat on deck to accompany herself (& The Dirty Wordz Session Band) in a couple of her pieces. As it was only our second session I wasn’t sure if that was against the rules but hey It was great & you can’t argue with brilliance.
Then we kicked of the first ever,(to my knowledge) Poetri-Sportz session in NZ. We had 5 contestants who seemed to come to grip with the concept quite nicely. Renee Liang took the prize away.
Murray Haddow invaded the stage with wild punk singing and assaulting the microphone with wordz, breaking a few rules (I’m sure) in the process. I thoroughly enjoyed doing a few numbers in between, I let myself loose to do a medley of ‘Doors On The Bus’ mixed with ‘Monkey Shines’ to a complete random backing track from the band. I guess ya had to be there… Simon from the bar has asked us to do Every 2nd Sunday Of The Month from now to eternity so if you’re ever in Auckland, NZ then you can.
Today I have a few curve balls in the mix with Ultravox’s ‘Vienna’ and a one off playing of the new Freak Meat track from our unreleased cd that we’re still in the studio making (so no stealing buddy) and for ‘Seeing Double, Drinkin Singles’ (the Country/Western show on before me), I’ll start with a spoken-word classic from The Man In Black.

I know I’m saying this every week now but what a lovely twisted mix of Dirty Wordz I have for you today! Being St Pat’s Day (In New Zealand we are actually a day in front of most of the world, we’re clever like that…) so, when you listen in you may notice a lovely Celtic flavour to the Wordage.
From rare a archival Dylan Thomas to the very contempory Scream Blue Murmer (ex Belfast Touring Poets) doing a remake of Bob Dylan’s ‘Masters Of War’ in spoken word styles, we’ll be celebrating the beauty that The Celtic Heritage has bestowed on the world of Word.
Also In the studio I will have the largest array of guests I’ve had yet, Grey Lynn’s very own Wild Punk Poet Mr Murray Haddow said he’ll return to drop his punk prose in the role of ‘Munro’- a gentleman of the road and Chicago DefJam Poet Nikki Pattin will also be coming back to pay her last visit before heading down to the Wee Briskness of The Dunedin Fringe Festival.. for those of you who didn’t catch her riveting performance on Dirty Wordz a couple of weeks back, my recommendations just can’t do justice to eloquence of her rich Chicago style prose.
Fresh from his stellar performance with The Kerouac Band at The Kerouac Effect 09 is the incredible Texture (The Chemical Poets, Double Helix) from Edinburgh, who says he’ll be bringing some of his Scottish Stuff into the studio with him (as well as wordz I hope he means whiskey!!), Texture is one of the finest Beat Poets I have ever met and has just been awarded an official re-write of ‘Howl’ for 2009 by the Alan Gainsburg Estate.

Well Wordphiles its that time of week again, I am having a special show this week, in celebration on Jack Kerouac’s birthday this week I’m having a KerouWacky show which will include a 15 minute interview with Jack Kerouac, I would have loved to have had him in the Studio but of course that would be difficult what with him being dead and all so I dragged out the next best thing of a recorded interview with him by Ben Hecht, tune in for that. It’s lovely and really illuminates him in his glory and foibles. I’ll also be playing a lot of the performers at this Friday’s The Kerouac Effect 09 and a lot of tracks from all around the world and a song/poem reading by Lou Reed from his live readings from NY City in 1991. I will be capturing the show (if you miss Tues 3-5pm NZ time… for all you Wordphiles outside of New Zealand we are are a day before most of you) so I’ll post it out to you the day after.

Well the excitement for me is palpable, it’s as if I’m wading into the surf at a wild west coast surf beach. It’s only just over a week until The Kerouac 09 in which I’ll be MC’ing, guiding my guests through a massive over 4 1/2 hours of fantastic spoken word and music, to say that I have nervous energy is like saying Picasso did an art-piece or two.

Hi Dirty Wordz peeps,

First of all I want to apologise for not being able to do my show last week, I had some serious tech difficulties which made it completely impossible to do my show, I will endeavour for this never to happen again and the problem has been solved.

On a more exciting development The Thirsty Dog On Karangahape Road (Auckland, New Zealand) has given us the go ahead to start running ‘The Dirty Wordz Sessionz’ – a little project I’ve been brewing for a while which will involve 2 guest poets working with musicians and dj’s to give you a live example of the type of spoken word/music that we love here at Dirty Wordz followed by a short open mike (also with music) on Sunday afternoons once a month!

Our first show is scheduled for March and will feature Texture (Edinburgh’s Double Helix & Chemical Poets) & The Literatti’s Christian Jensen (also a Guerrilla Poet & organiser of Poetry Live)

Hey well I’m back from the Short Circuit Tour and yes it was all the madness and dangerous fun mixed with fantastic music that we have come to expect over the years. I can hardly believe it’s 5.5 tours if I hadn’t have done them meself, haha.. Thanks to all those that helped and came to our gigs. (Hugs to The Dr and Claire)

Thanks soo much Jamie and Volita for all your hard work setting it all up and running it, I'm sure it must have been stressful at times and you did a brilliant job.
Some of my highlights was hearing the Kalashnikovs and The Benka Borodovski Bordello Band (god how do you spell any of that!) and meeting some of the wonderful fleeters that came especially Elvis & Eva, God vs Math and Tom the mad scotsman and his crew.

Dirty Wordz show 6 with guest selecta Murray Haddow 23/12/08

Well this was a wild experiment… I thought I’d ask Murray Haddow to come in and be my guest selecta for show number 6 because… well, because he is a person who is intensely into music, like myself and is also an amazing poet. I have been known to sit in his garage to the tiny hours fuelled by strange mixes, listening to the beautiful and bizarre, talking wild-beat about poetry and plotting our poetical uprisings and gigs on many an occasion.
Anyway getting Murray into a studio is always an exciting event. When I first asked him his reaction was a sharp No! He claimed to be a technophobe and totally unable to work the complicated electronics of a mixing desk until I pointed out that it was not dissimilar to just running two of his home stereo units beside each other. Anyway I went around the night before he was due on and with the help of a few cold ones we ran through his two hour set adding and readjusting it until we felt we had cooked up our bitches brew for the day. I felt I had locked him into the deal and just to make sure I arranged to meet up before the show.
When we got to the studio it all came together sweet with the only shabby bits come from me, Murray took to the job with aplomb after he worked out how to speak into the mic.
As a guest on the show we had the lovely HANNAH-May DE CUBA who has just released a book of poems called 'Menagerie' with illustrations by Vincent Lum. Hanna is also one of the organisers of the ‘Metonomy’ exhibitions and a regular at Poetry Live, so we talked of poetry and what was happening in the world of Metonomy (coming back soon…) then she read a poem from her book.
I have asked Murray to consider being one of the 4 ‘Dirty Wordz’ djs.. watch this space…

hmmn...
Well what can i say i'm a bit down this week because i had my first show in 3 weeks as Penny Ashton played last week & Genivieve McClean played the week before (playlists comming on that), so i spent dayz cooking up a wild set of twisted and dirty wordz for the show (maybe my best set yet?), stormed the studio, ripped it up on the mike and even though my guest pulled out at the last moment still managed to do my best show,...
only to find out that nobody listened at all...
how do I know this ?? because Murray tuned his radio in as usual only to hear static and appearently the internet was down again.. yay,
I can't seem to log on my show to the website to podcast and nobody seems to know anything or respond to any form of communication...
:(
I wonder if B want a dirty wordz show?
Perhaps i'll try to suss out podcasting....

Yesterday I had my 3rd Dirty Words show & had punk rapper extraordinaire Tourettes in the studio for an interview, he talked about touring to Australia and Japan and supporting Dizzy Rascel, Atmosphere and Sage Francis. Then in the studio was musician Matt Riece who talked about his collaborations with poets and the difference between composing for song and poetry. Matt is a multi instrumentalist and brought along his didge, a Jews harp and a thumb piano which he proceeded to play culminating in a live jam with me with Matt on the thumb piano and me doing my Drowning at Te Henga poem.
I had a lot of fun again which was only slightly marred by a ghost in the machine where the decks kept cutting out when someone tried to fax the studio repeatedly, which for some reason cut into the output. Fleet are going to be moving soon so maybe the new studio will have better wiring (anything is possible).

Dirty Wordz Show 2 18/11/08

Hey Dirty Wordz lovers,
Guess what, I soo LOVE doing radio!!
I had my 2nd show yesterday and somehow managed to have even more fun than I did on the last one, I even caught myself secretly boogieing (quietly of course) in the studio to the tracks while I was playing them.

It really helped that I had spent a good few days of doing some intense research and following up leads of poets that friends had offered up (thanks heaps people keep the suggestions flowing, I wanna hear all about your favourites!) in the process I discovered a new favourite poet; the fantastic C.R. Avery with his sublime blend of spoken word, hip hop, beat boxing and harmonica playing (often at the same time!) to very dirty jazz. He has opened for Tom Waits on a few occasions and I can see why Tom would want him at his show.

I had the wonderful Penny Ashton (The Pink Poet) up for an interview first and I asked her some pertinent questions such as what it was like to tour Canada & play at The Bowery Bar NY (bitch! i'm not jealous honeest!) and she was sharp and thoroughly charming. I had to ask her a question and then run out of the room (leaving her stranded on air!) to open the door for my next quest, the sublime Genevieve McClean.

Genevieve had lugged all the way up to the studio a vacuum cleaner, which she proceeded to use as a musical accompaniment!! Wow I asked her about the fine line between performance poetry and spoken acting (she is a well known actress as well as a cutting edge performer) and we had a blush moment when I admitted to how much she had inspired me to branch into a more performance orientated style of spoken word.We also did a live impromtue thing in the studio.

The good news is that both Genevieve and Penny have agreed to co-host the show with me in the future which means that when I'm on tour I will still have someone to look after baby and they will bring their rich talents, choices, contacts and styles to the show, so keep an ear out for when they're on! I'll keep you all in the loop.

This weeks selection was filled with strange and eclectic moments of dirty words with a few surprises thrown in like Love will tear us apart again: Joy Division, Line Em: Leadbelly... yes I do consider them spoken word.

Also I'd love to start podcasting the show but am still new to this so I have to get my head around podcasting (any advice is welcome!) so look out for the podcast soon...

I will say it again I LOVE doing radio and I LOVE doing on FleetFM who really have given me the freedom to play whatever I like no matter how uncommercial it may be (10 min poem pieces bring it on!!), and I just want to say thanks to Volita for giving me this opportunity, to the people who gave me suggestions to follow up and of course the people who listen.
Keep it up and I’ll keep beaming out those Dirty Wordz.

Welcome to the 'Dirty Wordz with Shane Hollands'

Well, maybe it's a welcome for me too as I thought with the advent of my first radio show I should really start to document the mad fun that I'm having.
I guess I'm a bit late on the old Blogger scene but bugger it why not.
Well how did it all come about?
I was in the Fleet studio being interviewed by Volita when she mentioned that they wouldn't mind a radio show on poets. I had done quite a few radio interviews at that stage and had just come off the Short Circuit tour (where I got friendly with Bennet and Claire from RDU in CHCh) & the idea of doing my own radio show was super appealing to me, so I stuck my hand up like that annoying guy in a lecture theatre and said 'I'll do a show!!!'
Anyone who knows me personal like would be able to tell you how mad I am about collecting and playing music and I have a firm bent for spoken word so it seamed like the perfect thing to do for me to have a go at in typical kiwi style and fleet being a relatively small radio station of madly independent dj's playing wild ass shit was an opportunity I just couldn't look away from.
...so I walked in the following Wednesday and blammo!!
Volita (The uber-cool manager of fleet) had me on my own show 'Dirty Wordz with Shane Hollands' on 88.3 Fleet Fm by the following Tuesday on drive time no less!
That's how 'Dirty Wordz' came about, honest.
Liking music and having a massive secret supply of spoken word does not a radio show make, so i spend a couple of day's trawling through my stuff doing a whip around of some of my favourite artists and phoned up my good friend Murray Haddow to offer him an interview. I sorted out 1.9 hours worth of music for the show jut in case and set it in a play list ready to go on my itunes.
I thought, sweet that's me then.
I think that's always a bad sign...
Volita had said "you can just bring it up on your ipod, plug in and away you go", ha ha well not wanting to really appear like the true beat that i am i didn't mention that not only do I not have a ipod, I haven't got a mp3 player, memory stick or any such type of transportation device.
So the madness begins...
My flatmate said I could grab one of his blank Cd's, and so 3 hrs before I'm due in the station I am burning all my tracks when I get *error printing to drive*. Can you imagine!?! There were a few Dirty Wordz slipping out of my mouth at that moment with fuck being the most constantly used one. I scrambled through the pile of old Cd's I have above my computer at one of those vague tips you get in your head and found the magic blank CD, Burned the tracks and scooted late-like around to meet up with Murray at his house.
Arriving at the studio, lucky there was a guy there to show me a little of my way around the radio desk, I spent a manic 10 mins loading up the tunes into (Winamp!!) and resetting out my playlist in some semblance to what I had at home.
Mostly I would say from then on in it was a hell of allot of fun. I don't think i had the record for 'dead air' but there was a healthy dose of it and I started my radio life with 'California Uberalis' by The Dead Kennedys, not exactly beat poetry but come on he's not singing either...
Having the wild man of NZ poetry - Murray Haddow in the studio was great fun and the adjective 'Bull in a radio-shop' seems appropriate, though weirdly he had a calming effect on the landlord who dropped in to have a growl weirdly at the Dj's who just happened to be at the station.
I finished the poetry show with 'Counting the Beat' by The Swingers, again not necessarily beat poetry but I wanna change the definition a little bit with this show, even if it's only me listening...
